INTERNAL QUALITY CONTROL

Having a sense of responsibility towards the examinee and his urologist, we have predicted a continuous internal quality control system for each semen analysis in order to ensure the quality and reliability of our results. The analysis and processing of semen is carried out by qualified biologists with specialized training in Spermatology.

For each semen analysis, we have predicted a continuous two-way control system between the operator and the computer. Each semen analysis is assisted by a sophisticated system of semen analysis through computer, the SCA® by Microptic.

The analysis through this system ensures that we get the highest level of accuracy, objectivity, standardization and reproducibility of results, while the possibility of storing images and video clips allows us to make the re-assessment of the same sample from different operators. If needed, the analysis of each sample can be repeated in a future time.

At least two operators review the analysis of each sample minimizing this way the subjectivity in their assessment. The reviewing of the same sample enhances the reliability of the results and offers the operators the possibility to continuously evaluate their skills and improve their estimations.

The estimations of a single operator are subject to personal judgment during observation. This is the reason why different operators may give different estimations for the same sample. The simultaneous use of a CASA system (Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis) provides us with a continuous internal quality control of the procedures and consequently of the analysis results. The possibility of recording morphology pictures or motility video clips for each sample provides external reviewers with the possibility of assessing exactly the same sample at different time and place (read also External quality control).

SPERMLAB is certified according to the ISO 15224:2012.

EXTERNAL QUALITY CONTROL

Our laboratory participates in the international program of external quality control of Microptic srl. Different laboratories worldwide analyze the same semen sample. Then, a reviewer compares the results and the deviation of each laboratory‘s estimations from the most prevalent ones is reported with special reference to the errors committed. This is expected to increase the laboratory’s reliability.

In order to render this external control efficient, a data recording system like CASA is mandatory (see also internal quality control). The possibility of recording morphology pictures or motility video clips for each sample provides external reviewers with the possibility of assessing exactly the same sample at a different time and place.

External quality control is often inadequate, since it is usually limited in the assessment of motility and morphology, without any reference to the prerequisites and conditions under which the analysis was performed. We have seen analysis performed after a very long abstinence, motility assessment after having kept the sample in the refrigerator for several hours, lack of physicochemical characteristics in the results and many more. It becomes thus obvious that the external quality control certification of a laboratory does not ensure that the examinee will get reliable results.
