In a time that man had not been taught to consult the urologist and that it was the gynaecologist who was dealing with his fertility, SPERMLAB believed that Men’s Health could be protected only through the collaboration of the gynaecologist with the urologist. Moreover, by improving the semen quality, the probability of the assisted reproduction techniques to succeed is increased. SPERMLAB set strict principals and methodized its progress, already since its first steps. Being a laboratory interested in the study of Men’s Health, SPERMLAB exhorted the gynaecologists to refer men to a urologist. Being a specialized laboratory, it focused in collaborations with urologists-andrologists, the only doctors competent to assess Men’s Health, consequently their fertility, too.
The high-quality standard of its services was recognized right away both by urologists and examinees. Today, SPERMLAB is distinguished as being the most reliable laboratory in semen analysis.
Since men were not taught to visit the urologist if not after the age of 50, SPERMLAB focused directly in the public’s awareness and reversed the flow. Instead of having the doctor to consult men for a semen analysis, it is SPERMLAB to consult them that they have to visit an urologist.
Our principal is the interest of the examinee.
In a time that men had a semen analysis only at the scope to check their fertility, SPERMLAB strived to disseminate that a semen analysis can inform men about their urogenital tract’s health. Since the beginning, it invested a significant part of its revenue in Men’s Health research. Thus:
- It developed a pioneering method for the study of the human semen.
- It determined new criteria for semen analysis with respect to the health condition of the urogenital system, not just its fertilizing ability.
- It defined the preventive Annual Andrological Checkup and the Semen Self-Exam.
- It disseminated the annual preventive andrological checkup and the Semen Self-Exam since adolescence.
- It specified the cognitive object of Spermatology and promoted the role of the biologist.
- It promoted the role of the urologist in Men’s Health since adolescence.
- It sponsored charitable actions of which:
- the constitution and continuous sponsoring of the International Foundation of Spermatology;
- the constitution and continuous sponsoring of the Hellenic Association of Spermatology;
- the constitution and continuous sponsoring of the International Journal of Spermatology;
- the organizing of awareness-raising actions by every mass-media;
- the training in Spermatology of undergraduated or graduated students of Biological Sciences Schools.
For us, each analysis is not just measurements and physiological intervals. We always take a short history and talk with the examinee before the analysis in order to better understand the situation and provide his urologist with the most complete information, which will help him make the correct diagnosis and advise for the proper treatment.
We keep working in collaboration with the examinee’s urologist in order to ensure that he gets the most effective diagnosis and treatment.
- We are a specialized laboratory. Non-specialized laboratories usually underestimate motility (high % of immotile sperm) and overestimate morphology (high % normal forms), findings that may be due to lack of proper equipment and specialized staff training.
- We investigate men’s (overall) health not only the fertilizing ability of semen. A semen may be able to fertilize without being healthy. For example, if the semen is infected, it may still be able to fertilize, but the pregnancy may end by having an abortion or the IVF treatment may fail.
- We care about men. We respect the need of every man for reliable information and advise him to always consult an UROLOGIST for the diagnosis and treatment, the same way that every woman consults her gynaecologist.
- We talk with the examinee before and after the analysis. We answer to his questions and inform him about anything a man needs to know about his health.
- Our principal is the interest of the examinee. In a time when no one abounds money, we care for that each examinee gets the most at the lowest cost. Among other initiatives, since 2013 we reduced by 30% the cost for semen analysis.
- We keep avoiding superfluous tests. For example, if both the examinee and his urologist agree, we would not proceed to a DNA fragmentation assay whenever already by the semen analysis alone the cause of infertility is revealed, in order to avoid charging the examinee unnecessarily.
